Hiroshima is located about 4 hours by shinkansen to the West of Tokyo. A city of 1 million people, it has six rivers flowing through it on their way to the Seto inland sea. On August 6 1945 it was the target of the first atomic bomb and it is here that we will visit the Peace park and the memorial museum; a poignant and unforgettable reminder of what happened on August 6 and in its aftermath.
A few hundred years ago there were 3 places that were written down in history as Japan's most scenic places. Miyajima was one of those places and most would agree that it still is one of those places. It is a small island just off the coast (about 20 minutes by ferry) and home to Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine is famous for its 'torii' gate which stands in the water just off the coast and appears to be floating during high tide. Deer roam around the island and you can travel to the top by cable car, where monkeys roam the hills.
